It can be difficult to know whether your lift system in your apartment or business building needs replacing or is simply looking a little dated. There are always things that will hold you back from making the decision to replace an elevator, including the cost, the disruption of business and the possible complaints from elderly or disabled users who rely on the lift on a daily basis.

There are a few things you need to look out for on a regular basis to ensure your elevator is working at optimal efficiency or if there is something which could develop into a serious problem.

Slowing Down

Noticing changes in the speed of your elevator when it travels between floors may mean you need to start thinking abut upgrades or replacements. When large parties are using the elevator each and every day it can add to the wear of major components. Putting your elevator through the strain regularly will deteriorate the system over time. In fact, it may be safer to start asking your guests and staff to start using the stairs as you have your elevator inspected by a professional.

Mid-Levelling

You may notice that your elevator no longer lines up smoothly with each floor. This is a sign that the brakes and cables – which are the main moving components in an elevator – are worn. Mid-levelling can occur over time and might not be noticeable to those who use it everyday as it starts to happen.

As the brakes start to wear down you may notice an increase in trips and falls occurring. This is due to the uneven level between the elevator car and the floor.

Constant Breakdowns

If there are constant problems with your lift system, the resulting call-outs and maintenance can end up costing you more than the cost of replacement. The major sign of an elevator needing replacement is a history of faults and constant break downs. Once it starts, the elevator will continue on a constant downward spiral until it is finally put out of its misery.

Keep an eye on your lift systems and platform lifts and if you notice any of these problems, be sure to call your lift installation company for more information on replacing it.
