Welcome to instalment four of our weekly football blog!

So, this week in the Premier league there were wins for City, Chelsea, Spurs and United whilst Liverpool conceded late on to draw 1.1 with Arsenal at the Emirates. That meant that City were able to open up a 2-point lead at the top of the table after pummelling a beleaguered Southampton, ahead of next weekend’s Manchester derby. After last year’s 3-2 win for United at the Etihad, this year promises to be a spicy encounter!

Whilst City’s attacking play was at times sumptuous, some of Southampton’s defending was comical, with little or no pressure on the ball. That’s kind of not advisable against City! Not sure what Mark Hughes was thinking really?! You feel it could be a long season for them unless they can get the basics right soon. As for City, can anyone stop them? Let us know below

At the opposite end of the table Rafa Benitez’ finally enjoyed his first victory as Newcastle overcame Watford 1.0 to offer some respite for their long suffering supporters – whilst Huddersfield have finally won a game and Leicester pleased the world by winning 1.0 at Cardiff after a truly dreadful week for the club with the tragic death of their chairman and four others last week at the King Power Stadium. Our condolences to everyone affected by that dreadful event.

So what else? Well, apparently Wayne Rooney is back in the England fold for a game against USA, who’d have thought that would happen? Not me! There’s been a few dissenting voices in the media but it’s a charity game, and a friendly, so I’m not sure there’s huge grounds to get one’s proverbial knickers in a twist.  Even if it does seem like a token indulgence. Although Callum Wilson might feel a little aggrieved, I’m sure his chance will come soon if he continues his fine form for Bournemouth, much to the chagrin of …me actually! Sadly I don’t have him in my fantasy football team! What do other people think, are you happy to see Rooney back?

In other news, I see Xherdan Shaqiri is not travelling with the Liverpool squad for their Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade – but he is neither injured nor out of form. Jurgen Klopp has said the pint-sized cannonball is staying at home to bulk up. Not really, he is staying at home to ‘avoid distractions’. By that, he is referencing a goal celebration made by Shaqiri when he netted for Switzerland against Serbia. The celebration was deemed to be political / offensive and Klopp has taken the decision to focus on the game, rather than the potential backlash Shaqiri may receive from section of the home support.

To me, that sounds like sensible management in an area of political unrest

Also in the news today is this statue of Mo Salah that has been unveiled in his native Egypt, have you seen it? One Twitter user compared it to Home Alone burglar Marv!

However,  I immediately thought it looked like Life of Brian or second glance, Michael Crawford from Some Mothers do ‘ave em!

Mo Salah or Life of Brian?!

Why can’t these sculptors do a better job? I mean come on, this is at best a bad likeness, and at worst an abomination?!

Not however as bad as the Cristiano Ronaldo one which was even worse and looked like Niall Quinn!
