The first phase of work is underway for the ground-breaking project undertaken by BBC’s DIY SOS team to turn empty houses into a new community for veterans in Manchester. Nick Knowles’ team have partnered up with a whole host of local traders, including Sheridan Lifts, to complete the project, as well as charity Walking with the Wounded. The aim is to build a dedicated community of streets for veterans, many of whom have PTSD and other war wounds and often find themselves living on the streets.
Sheridan Lifts are proud to be involved in giving back to our heroes and were delighted to be chosen as the lift company for the project. We are supplying and installing a special disabled access, platform lift, which will be for a triple amputee war veteran from The Irish Guards. The new lift we are supplying and fitting will be delivered on Wednesday so we’re on a tight schedule, but we’re more than up for the challenge and we know we’ll get everything completed on time!
We were on site yesterday whilst filming occurred for the programme which will document the building of the community, which includes Canada Street and New Street in Milesplatting . The show will air on the BBC on the 14th and 20th October. You can see some of the work we’ve started already in the pictures below:
After some last minute drop-outs the project still needs general building materials, screeders, a flat roofing system, skips, roofers, brick layers, joiners and landscapers. Any local trader who wishes to be involved can email: diysosheroes@bbc.co.uk
